Children’s Outreach
Service Program
Children’s
Outreach Services Program (COSP) provides intensive wrap-around mental
health services to children in their homes, schools, and communities.
Many children need more concentrated care than traditional
outpatient services can provide. Our program employs the highest
quality treatment professionals to provide these additional services. Our primary goal is to allow the child and family to thrive in their homes and schools so that the need for expensive
and disruptive hospitalizations or residential treatment can be avoided.
Each child is unique, with his or
her own set of individual strengths and needs. We begin our helping process by calling together an interdisciplinary team
meeting at which these strengths and needs are identified. These interdisciplinary teams are made up of the individuals who interact with the child on a regular basis and understand him or her the best.
Since families are the key source of knowledge about each child, they are a crucial part of our treatment teams.
The second step in our treatment process is the creation of an individualized treatment plan, which is designed
to maximize the child’s strengths and to help him or her learn more successful ways of functioning. We meet the
needs of at-risk children by providing a wide range of diagnostic
and treatment strategies. Our employee roles include the following:
- The Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS) employee works intensively with children
in their schools, homes, and communities. These staff members
provide one-on-one support through the provision of behavioral reinforcement,
emotional support, self esteem building, time structuring activities,
and other psychosocial rehabilitative activities
which are prescribed in the child’s individual
treatment plan.
- Mobile Therapist (MT) is available to provide psychotherapeutic
services to children and their families in a range of community
settings.
- The Behavioral Specialist Consultant (BSC) provides direction and planning
throughout the treatment process. He or she supports
the Therapeutic Staff Support worker by providing close clinical supervision, monitoring
the child’s
progress, designing and overseeing intervention strategies, and
providing modification of the child’s
treatment plan as the need arises.
Who can use our services?
Our program is
funded through the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT)
provision of Medical Assistance. Therefore, children who receive medical assistance,
have emotional disabilities and who are at risk of hospitalization or other
restrictive placement, are eligible for services up to their twenty-first birthday.
Typically, children who receive our services have been in outpatient individual
or family therapy without marked change in their most difficult behaviors.
Many of our children have emotional problems that lead to acting out or difficulty
in school, and/or have problems at home that affect the family as a whole.
What types
of problems can Children’s Outreach Services Program help with?
If your child is experiencing
one or more of the following problems, Children’s Outreach Services Program
may be able to help you and your family:
Running Away
Aggressive Behavior
Isolation
Dangerous Behavior Hyperactivity & Impulsivity
Difficulties with Anger
Depression
Anxiety or Worry
What
about fees?
If your child is covered by Medical Assistance or a Medical Assistance
HMO, he or she is eligible for these services without any cost to the family.
Our Mission is to provide quality services for children with special needs
within a caring and therapeutic environment. If you would like more information
on Children’s Outreach Services Program, please call us at (215) 508-3300.
